Celebrity Suicides - Published, Hidden, and Nebulous Causes of Death - Part I of III

With the recent suicides of comedian Richard Jeni and band Boston leader Brad Delp, I started to reflect and research about other high-profile suicides. I learned that there were many famous, success people, talented artists, actors and musicians who suffered from depression and have successfully committed suicide. Sadly too many for just one post.

I never had suicidal ideations prior to vagus nerve stimulation therapy. I just didn't want to live. There is a subtle difference. We all know the difference between not wanting to live and actually committing suicide.

If you have suicidal ideations, you should immediately call 911, a family member and the Suicide Help Line; 1-800-SUICIDE( 800-784-2433)

These people had everything, yet they had nothing:

Johnny Ace (1954), singer, American singer, playing Russian Roulette

Nick Adams (1968), American actor ("Rebel without a Cause" with James Dean), close friend of Elvis Presley and member of Elvis' so-called "Memphis Mafia", overdose of paraldehyde and Promazine.

Marshall Applewhite (1997), leader of the Heaven's Gate cult

J. Clifford Baxter (2002), Enron vice-chairman

Ricky Berry (1989), American NBA Basketball player (Sacramento Kings)

Jonathan Brandis (2003), American actor, Kate & Allie, LA Law, hanged

Cheyenne Brando (1995), Daughter of Marlon Brando, hanged

Kurt Cobain (1994), lead singer and guitarist of the American rock-band Nirvana, gunshot

Ray Combs (1996), former host of popular American game show Family Feud, used bedsheets to hang himself

Dennis Crosby (1991), actor, son of Bing Crosby

Andrew Cunanan (1997), killer of Gianni Versace and four others

Denice Denton (2006), University of California Chancellor, jumped from 42-story San Francisco apartment building

Richard Farnsworth (2000), U.S. actor, Oscar nominee

Vincent Foster, (1993), Deputy White House Counsel in the Clinton Administration, gunshot

Sigmund Freud (1939), founder of psychoanalysis (lethal dose of morphine)

Dave Garroway (1982), original host of NBC's Today Show

Rusty Hamer (1990), American former child actor (The Danny Thomas Show)

Lois Hamilton (1999), actress, The Dukes of Hazzard and Three's Company, locked herself in a hotel room, took sleeping pills and placed a plastic bad over her head.

No single factor has gained acceptance as a universal cause of suicide. However, depression is a common phenomenon amongst those who commit suicide. Psychiatrists says that depression is suicide left untreated, but suicide is 100% preventable if treatment is sought.

I was shocked at the number of well-known suicides and I am only partially finished with this research project. Please comment with any insights as to why famous people commit suicide. Perhaps we all can learn something.

Charles Donovan was a patient in the FDA investigational trial of vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression. He was implanted with the vagus nerve stimulator in April of 2001. He chronicles his journey from the grips of depression thanks to vagus nerve stimulation therapy in his book:

Out of the Black Hole: The Patient's Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression

His all inclusive book prepares depression sufferers to make an informed decision about this ninety-minute out-patient procedure. It is a "must read" before you discuss this treatment with your psychiatrist. A prescription for the procedure is required from an M.D. and it is covered by most insurance plans.

DVD Review - The Lake House (2006)

If you are looking for a romantic story that shows an extremely independent woman and a very self-reliant man fall head over heels in love, even though they are literally out of sync with each other, The Lake House is a perfect movie for you to see. The story is set in the woodsy northern Illinois area of Lake Michigan, which makes a gorgeous background to watch two people try to sort out their demanding careers and lonely frustrating lives.

The film stars Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, both former co-stars of the film Speed. This romance is actually a story retold from the Korean movie "Siworae". Masterfully directed by Alejandro Atresti, Lake House reveals a mystery centered on a typical looking mailbox right in front of a house on Lake Michigan that somehow is able to bridge time between these two strangers.

Long after she has moved away from her lakeside home, Bullock who plays a lonely physician, starts to write letters to Reeves, who plays a frustrated architect while he is living in the very same lakeside house. After exchanging a series of letters, they both eventually discover that they are living two years apart in time.

Through several life changing events in both of their lives, the two distant lovers can only share their joys, frustrations, humor, tragedies, and dreams by mail. As other lovers come and go, as parents pass away, and even as birthdays pass, they can still only share these life changing events over the years by mail. Life keeps throwing them twists and turns, causing even their best schemes to meet each other in person, to slip just beyond their reach, or in this case, time.

Sandra Bullock plays her role brilliantly as a hospital doctor with long hours at work and a cat to play chess with, with both relentless compassion and gentle humor. During the film, her life spans time in her life during an era in college, to when she has another boyfriend, and then during her time spent in her lonely, busy career as a physician.

Keanu Reeves has added his own finesse by portraying a very creative architect, living with the disapproval of his extremely well known and famous architect elderly father who has held his son back from building a business with his younger fellow architect brother. He yearns for someone to love, to share his creative dreams and his passion for life.

Although at first, neither the physician nor the architect particularly like one another, however as more letters get exchanged, they became increasingly involved with each other's life and develop a love for each other that only grows stronger as the years pass by.

The Lake House was made in 2006 and is rated PG for some strong language and disturbing images.

188 Stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) - Easy Screenwriting

FORWARD

The 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE 188 STAGE HERO'S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES (188+ stages of the Hero's Journey (Monomyth) you need to know about...):

(simply go to www.clickok.co.uk for full details)

*****Night Sea Journey subplot*****

Just as the Hero suffers a Near Death Experience, so do subplot characters. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Alma runs from Ennis and the house and finda another postcard from Jack. Lureen doesn’t say anything when they insult Jake; didn’t that piss ant used to ride bulls; he used to try.

*****Inner Challenge Reminder*****

Post Trial 3, the Hero is often reminded of remaining challenges. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Ennis gives Alma the kids and Pop throws Jake the keys.

*****Taking Control*****

Post the Crossing of the Return Threshold and before the Master of Two Worlds and Selves, a hell of a lot happens that is rarely given mention. The Final Conflict (a metaphor for this stage) follows a distinct process. During this stage, it is post the letting go of the old self that the hero begins to command the situation. In Straw Dogs (1971), David commands Amy to "....stay there and do as you're told or I'll break your neck....." It is here that allies begin to have confidence. In Straw Dogs (1971), Amy complies.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES (188+ stages of the Hero's Journey (Monomyth) you need to know about...):

*****The One*****

As noted before, the Seizing of the Sword (a tangible) is a metaphor for the intangible (Expansion of Consciousness). It is now, once the Hero has gained his (or her) Expansion of Consciousness, that others believe that he (or she) may truly be The One, The Saviour, The Messiah, the one capable of defeating the previously unbeatable Antagonism. In Dances with Wolves (1990), Two Socks takes the meat from John's hand. In The Matrix (1999), Trinity et al begin to believe Neo is the one.

*****Overcoming Doubt (into the Road of Transformation and Trials)*****

Pulled In. Though doubtful, the Hero is pulled into the Transformation. In Shawshank Redemption (1994), the library and helping the guards with their taxes pulls Andy in.

Encouragement. Mentors or some other force may encourage the Hero. In Dances with Wolves (1990), the Indians meet and decide to engage with John. In Scarface (1983), Frank helps Tony's maturation into dealer. In Gladiator (2000), Juba attempts to persuade Maximus to fight. And Proximo is intrigued by him.

*****Apotheosis*****

Apotheosis is the overcoming of the limitations of Inner Challenges. The Hero no longer requires Mentor figures and here, most often, the Mentor departs. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Mama tells them they’re going to die soon; they better keep running; bye baby.

*****Heroine's Journey*****

It is a mistake to believe that the Heroine's Journey is separate and distinct from the Hero's Journey. The Journey is about pulling the Hero through a Process of Transformation, which is not gender (or culturally) specific. A good example is Million Dollar Baby (Academy Award Winner Best Film, 2004) - though Maggie and Frankie both have their challenges, the process towards Apotheosis and beyond is the same.

Voice Overs Tell Stories

People have been telling stories since the dawn of time, drawing upon their voice to convey their messages to others in their circle of influence. Over the centuries, the art of communicating with other people about a given purpose and the transmission of the spoken word, the most powerful, persuasive, and distinctly human tool in any marketers arsenal, has evolved to the degree that you don't have to be in the same room to get a message across, even the same country for that matter. Geographic locations and time zones afford little to no obstacle for communicating with others in a meaningful and cohesive way.

With all of the advantages this new world and new media bestows, it is very important that a message received is a message that is understood, believed and acted upon. Much of this depends on the copy writing and voice over skills of the messengers, which brings us to five different characters if you will that will help you get your message across in a direct and effective way.

1. Instructor (formal, didactic voice over)
2. Real Person (informal voice over)
3. Spokesperson (advocate, authoritative voice over)
4. Narrator (omniscient storyteller)
5. Announcer (sets the stage and calls for action)

Let's explore these types of character roles in detail.

1. Instructor

When teaching someone on what to do, for example, a corporate training video or children's game, the voice over best suited for this kind of project is a straightforward, didactic and educated voice. The role of this particular voice talent is to instruct or provide information to fulfill a specific goal or purpose.

2. Real Person

Projects requiring a more casual approach often benefit from relatable, genuine voice overs. These voice overs are referred to as "Real Person" voice overs, commonly known as the "regular guy" or the "girl next door". The character is homegrown, sensible, and friendly with a touch of familiarity and provides a more intimate interpretation that instills trust.

3. Spokesperson

A spokesperson can be on camera or off camera depending on the medium you are using. The role of a spokesperson is generally played by a confident, charismatic person able to promote a cause, product, or service with ease and authority. A voice over of this nature needs to be driven, optimistic and assured.

4. Narrator

Storytelling is where the narrator is most at home. Omniscient, courteous and honest, a narrator's job is to provide an audio landscape for a listener, briefing them on background information, posing questions, and providing solutions as they guide their audience through a program or documentary. Narrators can be male or female, and the most important factors are that they can communicate clearly and engagingly.

5. Announcer

The announcer, often heard live at events, on commercials, promos or introducing segments for podcasts, is a product of the broadcast age, most celebrated at its height in the Golden Era of Radio and early television broadcasts. Announcers can introduce an idea and assertively make a call for action at the conclusion of a commercial advertisement or short video. One common misconception is that an announcer has to sound like an announcer from decades ago, however modern announcers act more like narrators, and in many cases, adopt the Real Person approach.

More Players on Movie Download Field

Two major retailers have moved into the online movie sales business. WalMart and Amazon.com join existing properties in trying to convince the consumer their downloadable wares are more attractive than other, less "official" options. Do their services offer anything significantly different than the current players in the market, or is simply a case of the same limited options with different labels?

WalMart announced its entry into the download field at mediadownloads.walmart.com. At least, that's one of their promotional sites. WalMart enters the fray trumpeting licensure with all of the "big six" movie studios. That one feature does provide an advantage in that is allows them to offer a selection that eclipses most of the competition.

There is little else that is unique about it, however. There is download software made available much like Apple's iStore, but it utilizes Microsoft's DRM piracy protection technology. That means the service won't operate over Firefox or other browsers and won't run on Zune, PSP, iPod, or computers running Mac or Linux.

WalMart sells about 40% of the DVDs in this country and says they'll provide price protection for their products on the shelves. That means you won't see much of that to-the-bone price cutting on downloaded products. Prices will range from a couple of bucks for a TV show up to close to $20 for a film in recent DVD circulation.

The other challenge for WalMart is their corporate policy that every product they sell should be designed to draw customers into their stores. A product designed to deliver itself to your PC isn't going to do that. Currently, Walmart spokesmen are saying that their intent to bundle a movie download with the purchase of a DVD will meet that requirement.

That's WalMart's answer to delivering your download to the TV screen. It seems somewhat duplicative, but they are chasing the business in a big way. Wal-Mart's online video-rental service failed to do just that, and the corporation folded up the business after a relatively brief test drive.

Amazon's version of the video download service is called Unbox. They too are a major retailer for DVDs and see this business as complimentary. Their only marketing responsibility for the product is to drive people to their website - unlike the brick-and-mortar based WalMart.

Amazon launched without Disney, which is a major player in the Apple online video product development. That may have something to do with the fact that, when Steve Jobs sold the Pixar animation studio to Disney, he also became their biggest shareholder. At any rate, Apple's movie products are limited to Disney and Paramount. The other online services such as CinemaNow and Movielink are all also missing one or another of the major movie houses as partners.

What Amazon has done to bypass the issue of portability with downloaded movies is to develop a partnership with TiVo. The later versions of the TiVo recorder will be able to download Amazon delivered films and play them back on your television. With the rest of the Internet-delivered video companies, the downloaded product pretty much remains trapped on your download device. Apple's films can be downloaded by some iPod products and other handheld players, while WalMart, at the moment, is wedded to the PC.

It's a smart move on Amazon's part - four out of the six major movie studios and a television viewing partner. That relationship is limited, however, by the fact that TiVo's current distribution base of boxes with internet connectivity is a little over 1.5 million units. It's a start, but a small start on dealing with getting that downloaded movie to your television. Apple is planning a similar set top box to provide the same viewing capacity.

According to PricewaterhouseCoopers, the Internet video download business is expected to be worth $3.7 billion in annual revenue in 2010, when DVD rentals and sales as a business will amount to about $29.5 billion.

What Do You Know About Internet Movie Download Sites? - Internet Movie Download Sites Heads Up

As you may know, there are tons of places online where you can find options for Internet movie download Sites. The thing you need to be concerned about is which sites are legal.

There are many sites that offer movie downloads, but no where on the site can you find their claim to be doing this legally. There are some sites that ask you not to use the term 'legal' if you are promoting them in a blog or website. Why would they be concerned about that term being used if they were on the up and up?

Another thing to watch out for are the sites that claim to offer file-sharing networks. These sites will look very professional, giving you the impression that they are perfectly legal. The drawbacks are these peer to peer type networks cannot offer you a guarantee that the movie you are downloading is a legal copy. If you do use one of these sites, make sure they are backed up by some of the major movie studios.

Another concern you may have is whether these movie downloads are priced appropriately. Anytime you are supporting site that offers legal movie downloads, you may be opening up doors to lower prices for everyone as well as better quality.

There are numerous reasons for using legal Internet Movie Download sites, and here are a few of those reasons:

* The first one is that the quality of the movie will far surpass that of a bootleg copy.

* Have you ever watched a bootleg copy of a movie, trying to see the figures, unable to distinguish the picture because of the fuzziness? Admit it, watching a bootleg copy of a video is not an enjoyable experience.

* When using a legitimate Internet movie download site, you are going to get a movie with excellent quality.

* You get the latest in technology when you go to the higher end Internet Movie download sites, giving you the same quality as watching a DVD or a movie on your TV. This again is where the major movie production studios are backing the website, ensuring you the best quality.

* No worries about breaking the law.

* You may think you can get away with downloading movies illegally, and yes, you may for a while, however, you or anyone else can be tracked back to the IP address where you downloaded the movie. Is it worth it to you to take a chance on being caught, being charged a hefty fine, and yet, you have to now pay all this for watching a lousy bootleg copy?

* Illegal Internet movie download sites are making the legal sites more expensive.

Be a part of the solution, not the problem, when supporting Internet movie download sites. Be one that is watching and supporting the movie business in a legal and ethical way, guilt free, and have the best quality all at the same time.

Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who - Family Movie Review

Movie Mama Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Starring: Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Dan Fogler, Carol Burnett, Seth Rogen
Directed By: Jimmy Hayward, Steve Martino
Running Time: 1 hr. 28 min.
MPAA Rating: G

Horton is an optimistic, faithful elephant who is friends with everyone--even those who dislike him. One day, while taking a bath in the jungle, a tiny dust speck floats past him. At the same time, Horton hears someone cry for help and he believes it was a tiny person living on the speck. Once the speck lands safely on a clover, Horton attempts to make contact with the tiny person and succeeds. He finds out that there is an entire city, called Whoville, living on the speck. He befriends the city's mayor and together, they try to find a place where the speck will be safe. But the other animals in Horton's jungle aren't too thrilled to find him talking to a speck of dust. Thinking Horton is delusional, they attempt to destroy the speck for the good of the jungle. But Horton is not about to denounce his beliefs, and he does everything in his power to save Whoville.

For a G-rated film clearly targeted toward very young children, Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who is a delightful film. The colors are rich, the animation is exceedingly well done, and Horton is a wonderful role model. But for middle school age to adults, the film will be painfully predictable and slow paced. I know why Jim Carrey and Steve Carrell were cast for their particular roles of Horton and the Mayor, but they have a lot of dialogue together and at times I found it hard to distinguish between their similar voices. Children probably won't recognize that Carol Burnett has been cast for Kangaroo, but for an old movie lover like me, I couldn't get past her very obvious voice--I pictured her face each time Kangaroo spoke a word. However, there are some very funny parts, and around 3/4 of the way through, the film gets quite touching and adventurous.

PROS

Dr. Seuss touches on a lot of important topics in this story. One very obvious one is the relationship between the Mayor and his son, JoJo. The Mayor is depicted like many tv or film parents, as he is always talking to his son but never listening. In fact, JoJo never even says a word until the very end of the movie. The Mayor is set on JoJo following in his footsteps and becoming Mayor of Whoville one day, but JoJo has other aspirations. Although this storyline is another reminder to parents to pay attention to their children, it falls a bit short. I was so intrigued by JoJo and couldn't wait to hear what he had to say, or what he did each night when he snuck out of the house. But when I finally did find out, it was a bit of a let down.

Kangaroo says several times that "if you can't hear it, see it, or touch it, it doesn't exist." This sentiment is refuted by Horton, who risks his life for what he believes in.

Not only is Horton steadfastly faithful, he also keeps his word. He often says, "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant is faithful 100%." Not only is this a good mantra for our children, it is for us as well.

CONS

Although the film is never crude, there are a few things I'll point out. When the Mayor tries to convince the city council that Whoville is in danger, the council points to a photo of a donkey's rear end and then points to the Mayor. Also, the Mayor is called a "boob" several times and the word is tossed around throughout the entire film. While the Mayor is at the dentist, he is accidentally stabbed in the arm with a needle--this part gave me the willies. There is also a part where a vulture almost chokes on a bone.

At one point, Kangaroo proudly proclaims that her child is "pouch-schooled." This might offend some home-schooling mothers as Kangaroo is the 'bad guy' in the film.

OVERALL

I can't say it's one of the best children's films, but then again I can't say we'd be better off without it. It will make a great movie to own on DVD--young kids will probably devour it over and over--but it's not an all time classic. If you're looking for a movie that you can enjoy with your children, try a Pixar classic like Monster's Inc. or Finding Nemo. The storylines are much more engaging and rich, and they can keep an audience (young or old) completely captivated.

The Other Boleyn Girl Movie Review

This film is set in King Henry VIII English court. It tells the tale of two sisters fighting for the love of the hunky Eric Bana who plays Henry VIII. It is the typical tale of love, drama, deceit and how power corrupts. The two Boleyn sisters take in turns to have affair with the King. Anne is the one who is trying to use the affair to gain power and the throne whereas The Other Boleyn Girl, Mary comes across as more naive and exploited, though ultimately it is Anne who loses when she is beheaded. This is based on the book, and for those who read and enjoyed the book it is likely you will really enjoy this film as.

This film has an all star cast including Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson who play the two Boleyn sisters. Natalie Portman's performance is particularly good as usual and she is surely establishing herself as one of the best actors in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson is good but her performance is overshadowed by that of Natalie Portman. Their performance is gripping and really made me interested in what could have been a boring plot, so well done to the casting director of this film for choosing two of Hollywood's best young actresses. Eric Bana is convincing as King Henry and offers something for the female viewer. However, his performance, while being realistic was nothing spectacular. The ridiculousness of some of the costumes may mean the Other Boleyn Girl loses some of its appeal to a younger audience. When I went to the cinema some of the audience kept randomly laughing because of the costumes.

However, I thought the costumes were impressive and certainly historically accurate in my opinion, though I am not sure I would have enjoyed wearing them! The scenery and impressive castles help create the right atmosphere and make you feel that you are back in the Tudor times. I am not sure about the historical accuracy in some places but you have to ignore that to enjoy the film. Obviously, some historical facts are exaggerated but if Hollywood can condense a war that lasted years into a two week battle like in Troy then I am sure they are allowed to change a few facts in The Other Boleyn Girl.

Ultimately, this is a good well rounded film. It has a good plot with plenty of drama and deceit. The acting is good particularly from Natalie Portman who is spectacular and utterly convincing as a ruthless power hungry woman. For some people there may not be enough action and if you are that type of person then do not see The Other Boleyn Girl. If you are not and enjoy historical dramas then go and see it.

Step Up 2 - The Streets

Step Up 2 is the sequel to the highly popular dance movie Step Up. Sequels are often not as good as the originals and this film is no different although i did not think the original was that great either. The film is about a street dancer Andie who is tough and definitely a fighter. She abandons her street dancing friends to try and make it in a proper dance school. She tries to fit in at an elite Maryland School of Arts but finds it difficult to fit into the typically pompous school.

Things get worse when her friends find out where she is. So she decides to form her own street dance crew to prove that they can dance on the streets. It is the cliché uniting of two different cultures and there is the usual romance along the way. The main problem with this film was the plot. Not only have similar films been repeated a million times before but there is also no real plot development.

Other then the simple plot outlined above there are no twists or complications that cannot be seen and predicted 10 minutes before they happen! The terrible story is made worse by the poor acting which is a theme throughout the film. The film relies too heavily on the dancing. Dancing alone does not make a good film and it appears the makers of this film did not learn their lesson from Step Up. However, the dance moves in this film are spectacular and definitely worth seeing though not sure it is worth watching the film, unless you are really into dance films. In this aspect I would say the film is better than the original. In particular the closing dance sequence was sensational and the ability of Andie to shake her bum is also quite impressive. Moreover, the songs in this film were also very good.

The best songs were from Timbaland and Flo-rida ft. T-Pain. They were in keeping with the film and definitely worth downloading or buying. For me this was still not enough to salvage the film. Ultimately, I think if you would really enjoy this film if you enjoyed the first film and other films of this genre. For those who do not you will enjoy the dance moves but there is not enough to enjoy the film. The acting is terrible and the plot is very basic. If you do not go and see this film at the cinema then it is worth seeing at some point just for the dance moves.

"Horton Hears A Who" - A Beautiful Adaptation

Dr. Seuss is a master of children books for one simple factor, kids enjoy the silly situations coupled with the repetitive rhymes. Because of that fact, it is amazing that film companies delight in transforming Suess' twenty page books into full length movies. In the most recent picture, "Horton hears a Who," it becomes more attainable. It is one of the best adaptations due mostly to the fact that they adapted the more plot line heavy Seuss book. The story is about "Horton the Elephant" setting out on a quest to save Whoville, which is actually a speck on a clover (in "Horton's world). With master comedians such as Jim Carrey, Carol Burnett, and Steve Carrell, a little more laughing than what was produced, was expected. That aside, the movie was "cute" in every sense.

Jim Carrey Voices "Horton," a very excitable and imaginative elephant with the faithfulness of a true friend. The best character in this movie, "Horton" cares for others and lets his imagination fly, making him a great example for kids. "Mayor," (voiced by the "Office's" Steve Carrell) is a sensible yet caring family man who becomes "Horton's" friend and his voice of reason. While "Mayor" is amusing at points, his character is forgettable. The comedic genius Carol Burnett became the voice of "Kangaroo," an anal and often unbearable rule maker who is out for the destruction of the speck, which has wrecked havoc in her jungle. "Carol Burneett" is usually amazing, but in this one her character was just a character. It made for a good conflicting point for the movie.

The computer animation was fantastic. At certain points (mostly landscapes shots), you could really believe that there are places like Whoville and that elephants can talk. Computer animation's benefit is that it creates these amazing new worlds that look so substantial that they could be real. The beauty of the colors put into the animation can make you feel like a kid again, where everything is bright and beautiful. Laughs were very well placed all throughout. While the kids could laugh (monkeys throwing bananas), the adults could too (the donkey joke was hilarious). Another plus is that the humor wasn't sarcastic. Genuine sweet joking is rare in children's media now-a-days.

"Horton" teaches the audience that no matter how small something is, it can always make a difference. Even though others may think the speck is useless, it is a small world. It should be respected like everything else of a larger size. Just because we can't see it or feel it doesn't mean it's not there. "Kangaroo" insists the opposite throughout the whole picture, but "Horton" proves her wrong. If one just steps outside their own little box, they will find new experiences to discover. Life is everywhere and in every little thing.

"Horton Hears a Who" is enjoyable for children and adults alike. Children go for the laughs and the adults for the superb message. Some may laugh, cry, sleep, or just enjoy. But in the end it really doesn't matter, because what makes a good family movie is the ability for everyone in the family to feel something different (although sleeping is probably not the best reaction). "Horton" certainly delivers.

Rachael Rizzo has been acting since she was nine years old. She uses her experience to write about what the things she loves mean to her (mostly movies and baking). She is twenty-three years old and resides in beautiful Oregon.

Famous Cars on TV

K.I.T.T.: Though William Daniels won two Emmys starring on NBC's "St. Elsewhere" in the 1980s, it was his uncredited voiceover work on another NBC series, "Knight Rider," that helped ensure his place in pop-cultural history. The Knight Industries Two Thousand was an artificial intelligence designed to help Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) by providing advice and control for his black Pontiac Trans Am. K.I.T.T.'s deadpan delivery and pulsating LED on the hood made him an icon of early 1980s TV, and two episodes even featured an evil twin called "K.A.R.R.," also voiced by Daniels. Daniels has occasionally reprised his role for revivals and spoofs of the old series, though the new K.I.T.T. is voiced by film actor Val Kilmer - and is a Ford Mustang.

The Batmobile: The campy 1966 "Batman" series sent the Dynamic Duo off to fight crime in a rebuilt Ford concept car called the Lincoln Futura. Despite its sleek design and cool flaming exhaust port, the car was actually a lemon that required extensive parts replacement midway through the show's first season. The later Batmobile featured in Tim Burton's film was built on the chassis of a Chevy Impala.

The General Lee: "The Dukes of Hazzard" foiled many a scheme by Boss Hogg in this orange '76 Dodge Charger, which was capable of surviving crazy jumps without a dent. In reality, hundreds of Dodge Chargers were produced for the series to create this effect, and almost all of them were completely destroyed by the show's crazy stunts. It's a popular pastime for some show fans to restore Chargers to destroy them in public jumps. No matter how many are destroyed, the General's "Dixie"-playing horn and garish Confederate Flag will live on as long as there are fans of the show.

The Black Beauty: "Batman"'s more serious counterpart was "The Green Hornet," which starred Van Williams and a young Bruce Lee. The souped-up Chrysler Imperial boasted such extra features as a rocket launcher and bulletproof windows. In a special crossover, the Hornet and Kato met Batman and Robin. Both the Batmobile and the Black Beauty were designed by customizer George Barris....whose company also did the General Lee, K.I.T.T., and cars featured on many other shows including "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "Starsky and Hutch." The man gets around.

Mama: In the 1960s, any gimmick was fodder for a sitcom, from a talking horse ("Mister Ed") to a magical housewife ("Bewitched"). That said, 1965's "My Mother the Car," telling the tale of a man who finds his mother's ghost has inhabited a classic automobile, is infamous as one of TV's biggest flops. In fact, TV Guide named it the second-worst show in the history of television, right behind "Jerry Springer." The actual car was made of parts from different automobiles, including the Model T and the Hudson. One of the show's writers, James L. Brooks, went on to an enormously successful writing and directing career, including co-creating "The Simpsons." That show parodied "Mother" in an episode where Grandpa Simpson possesses a love-testing machine.
