The Other Boleyn Girl Movie Review

This film is set in King Henry VIII English court. It tells the tale of two sisters fighting for the love of the hunky Eric Bana who plays Henry VIII. It is the typical tale of love, drama, deceit and how power corrupts. The two Boleyn sisters take in turns to have affair with the King. Anne is the one who is trying to use the affair to gain power and the throne whereas The Other Boleyn Girl, Mary comes across as more naive and exploited, though ultimately it is Anne who loses when she is beheaded. This is based on the book, and for those who read and enjoyed the book it is likely you will really enjoy this film as.

This film has an all star cast including Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson who play the two Boleyn sisters. Natalie Portman's performance is particularly good as usual and she is surely establishing herself as one of the best actors in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson is good but her performance is overshadowed by that of Natalie Portman. Their performance is gripping and really made me interested in what could have been a boring plot, so well done to the casting director of this film for choosing two of Hollywood's best young actresses. Eric Bana is convincing as King Henry and offers something for the female viewer. However, his performance, while being realistic was nothing spectacular. The ridiculousness of some of the costumes may mean the Other Boleyn Girl loses some of its appeal to a younger audience. When I went to the cinema some of the audience kept randomly laughing because of the costumes.

However, I thought the costumes were impressive and certainly historically accurate in my opinion, though I am not sure I would have enjoyed wearing them! The scenery and impressive castles help create the right atmosphere and make you feel that you are back in the Tudor times. I am not sure about the historical accuracy in some places but you have to ignore that to enjoy the film. Obviously, some historical facts are exaggerated but if Hollywood can condense a war that lasted years into a two week battle like in Troy then I am sure they are allowed to change a few facts in The Other Boleyn Girl.

Ultimately, this is a good well rounded film. It has a good plot with plenty of drama and deceit. The acting is good particularly from Natalie Portman who is spectacular and utterly convincing as a ruthless power hungry woman. For some people there may not be enough action and if you are that type of person then do not see The Other Boleyn Girl. If you are not and enjoy historical dramas then go and see it.
