Online movie rental is popular. Like any service or product that sells a one billionth unit one must assume that it is valued, that the quality is high, and that customers are satisfied or it would not have reached such a mark. Indeed, the exclusive one billion club includes some pretty impressive members and in many cases members have had to endure for many years to attain membership.
In February 2007, Netflix, the founding online movie rental service, delivered its one billionth DVD. This was just beyond seven and half years after their initial offering in September 1999. Certainly, this was a milestone to celebrate for Netflix and one that reflects well upon the popularity of the service but how does it stack up to the achievements of other products and services which have attained this status?
One company that also recently hit the billion mark is Casio. In January of 2007, Casio sold its one billionth calculator. Impressive, however it took Casio approximately fifty years to reach this milestone. In 2049, when the online movie rental pioneer recognizes its fiftieth year, the 7 billion mark could be realized even if growth does not escalate. Will Netflix still be around? If it is, it will probably be a bit different, but it's flexibility in adapting its service in response to changing technologies is a positive sign. The first step in moving toward electronic versus mail delivery was initiated earlier this year.
Computers are probably considered one of the biggest product introductions into the market during the past century. The growth of the internet was explosive in the 1990's. However, it wasn't until approximately 25 years after the introduction of personal computers that the one billionth unit was shipped back in 2002; and this was a worldwide market. Likewise, despite humble beginnings way back in 1969 the internet experienced its billionth user, worldwide, in December 2005; nearly 36 years later. The Netflix online movie rental service is a more local service; providing classic, indie, and new release films for an audience based in the US. Of course, all of this could change as electronic delivery takes hold in coming years; could Netflix become an international player?
Certainly, when one imagines "billions" being sold, the name McDonald's is bound to crop up. We all know that many billions have been served but how long did it take them to reach their first billion? It appears that it took approximately 15 years after their introduction to achieve this status. At the time of course, McDonald's was not the mega international corporation that it is now. In addition, families ate most of their meals at home in the early years of the fast food icon. Perhaps McDonalds and similar services played a role in changing how Americans dine; taking them out of the home for nearly half of their meals. This change certainly played a role in hitting the billion mark. Likewise, it would seem that online movie rental services are also changing how we obtain and view movies; first from the comfort of our homes and now on demand through electronic delivery.
Global markets certainly increase the likelihood of attaining the one billion mark and getting there fast. Mobile phones, probably more than any other product, have taken the world by storm in the past fifteen years or so. Clearly mobile phones are used globally. In addition, these devices perform a wide range of tasks that make them nearly indispensable in the modern world. From communication and entertainment to connectivity and personal assistant types of functions, mobile phones are multi-tasking wonders. It is estimated that at least one billion mobile phones were shipped in 2006 alone.
Apple's iTunes has experienced similar success. After only three years in operation the service served up its one billionth download in Feburary 2006.
Online movie rental is not currently a global service like iTunes or mobile phones. Could this change? Perhaps. Certainly, iTunes has altered the way many people enjoy their music and mobile phones have changed the way we do business and stay in touch with others. Likewise, online movie rental appears to be gradually changing the way we enjoy movies. Perhaps recent changes to implement improved delivery will be the key to matching the success of mobile phones and the music downloads of iTunes.

The Pursuit of Happyness- Review
In 1981, Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith) was a broke, struggling salesman of un-needed overpriced medical bone density scanners, while his wife wallowed in misery over having to work double shift to support the family including a young son. Chris, seeing that his medical sales career was not going anywhere asked two very pivotal question to a passerby in a Porsche, what do you do and how can he do it. These two questions changed his life and set in motion his pursuit of Happyness.
Desperate to gain financial happiness for his son and himself Chris takes a chance and applies for a stockbroker internship where one in twenty has a chance of a lucrative full time career. But this chance does come with a price. The opportunity does not come with a salary as he trains for the position. Chris is forced to get serious about his medical bone density business and make it work while he studies for his brokers exams. Because of his pursuit of this dream and the downfall of the medical sales business Chris’s wife leaves him and he eventually becomes homeless. But he never loses his dream. He fights every step of the way for the pursuit of Happyness.
I absolutely loved this movie. It teaches tenacity and determination in the face of adversity. I especially loved the line Chris states to his son “Don’t ever let anyone say you can’t do something, their just trying to discourage you from something that they could not do”. What a statement, what a line. This movie is a tear jerker from beginning to end. It brings into focus would most of us fight for what we believe in after losing a wife, losing a car, losing a home and sleeping on the streets with their son or daughter. Or would we just fold away and settle for what life give us. If you have not seen this movie definitely rent this movie. Matter of fact “BUY IT”, you will not be sorry.

Road to the Final Rose - The Bachelor is One TV Show Worth Watching
Each year, many of us tune in to the latest installment of ABC's reality tv show,"The Bachelor." We follow the journey of the many women, chosen to compete against one another for the latest bachelor's affections and maybe, hand in marriage. Handsome men, beautiful women and breathtaking scenery are the norm. It is a visual person's delight to see this fantasy unfold, and eventually the pool of competitors dwindles to one partner for the lucky man.
The differences in women, who range from attorneys to waitresses, makes putting them all together in a house interesting. It's especially entertaining if any of them have major mental problems like narcissism (over-inflated feelings of importance). Flaming egotists are always a hoot, so let the sparks fly. It's inevitable that when fireworks develop, the producers pounce on any cat-fights that happen as we all watch with bated breath to see what happens. This sure does beat being young and competing with other women in real life for the attention of some hunk. It makes me remember the days when other women came up to my ex-boyfriend, crying because he was dating me and not them. Or, the two women I knew who relentlessly pursued the same man until he ended up surprising all of us by marrying someone else, jilting both the other women. By dressing in figure-flattering dresses, being charming and trying to stand out was how we did it years ago. Now, the women seem more even more aggressive, not only in trying to win the affections of the man, but in their disdain for other competitors. In my opinion, nobody is worth fighting for using that much venom, but hey, it's television and fun to watch. The more they verbally (and sometimes physically) slug it out, the better the ratings get. Cha-ching. That is why the show comes back every year, we all like seeing the craziness and back-biting that inevitibly happens when women compete for a hot guy.
Are any of these microscandals-like those who don't take no for an answer-staged? I'm not sure, but I bet this behavior, if natural, is encouraged. Sure, it hurts to be rejected. On national television, that would be even more embarrassing and devastating than for those of us in the real world, who don't have cameras following us everywhere. I feel sorry for the finalists towards the end of each season's series, because the more each woman knows the bachelor, the more attached she may become. And then, it makes the rejection all the harder, later. In front of millions of people who will stop them in the street later and give them condolences. That would be very hard.
Another issue that stands out in my mind is the drunken behavior of some of the girls. A few have a couple too many then do really stupid things. It's funny to watch, but I sure would hate to be that girl waking up the next day, hung over, knowing she made a fool out of herself in front of many millions of people. If that isn't a big, fat, sobering slap in the face, I don't know what is. That'll teach them to get drunk on tv. But then, maybe not. It all depends on the woman's self-respect, if she has any. Some people just don't care.
For the last woman, who gets that last rose and ends up with the Bachelor, it is a fairy tale, if not forever then at least for that moment in time. It's good to see beautiful people fall in love, and if it lasts, even better. Just ask Trista and Ryan. The Bachelor is a nice escape from the reality of our everyday lives. And, it's addictive. At work, people will talk about it, as will your friends and family. This is one "reality" show that hits the mark, a guilty pleasure sure to please.

An Uncompromisingly Frank View Into the (Past) Lives of Truly Disturbed Minds
"Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" (1986) tells the chilling story of a socially dysfunctional mass murderer in boldly flat and straightforwardly unforgiving realism that’s tough to fathom. Rather than exploiting the murders seen in so many of those clichéd horror flicks we see almost every Halloween or summer’s eve, its intention is to illuminate, not proselytize, diseased minds that are way too lifelike to begin with. But it is very hard to not call this work of supremely raw, independently financed refulgence a searing look into rape and murder not as forms of crime, but simply as nonjudgmental ways in which one can pass time and relieve stress.
Loosely inspired by the renounced confessions of a self-proclaimed Texas serial killer named Henry Lee Lucas, the film uses a razor-sharp slice-of-life approach to create a docudrama that’s arguably the most terrifying and disturbing account of sociopathic behavior ever made.
Filmed in the slushy, bleak, and misty winter nights of Chicago's grittiest back alleys, honky-tonk bars and drabbest apartments during the winter of 1985-86, Henry depicts a rather “low” drifter (played with remorseless authority by character actor Michael Rooker) driving around in his green 1965 Chevy Impala who happens to kill strangers unapologetically with no preferred method or pattern. The movie opens with a deeply creepy montage of dead bodies. Nobody knows if this is the work of the protagonist, but being the film overall is too believable, we might as well have to say so.
Tom Towles plays the equally unnerving role of Otis, a casually degenerated friend of Henry who eventually drifts into murder sprees through Henry, and Tracy Arnold is Otis' sister, an unemployed teenage stripper who knows Henry killed his mother and ironically finds the fact to be very fascinating.
Henry becomes the roommate of Otis, a parolee working at a local gas station, and then the sister arrives from out of town and moves in with the externally cool yet internally bad-tempered mass murderer. Otis, who may have a homosexual interest in Henry from their days in prison (a scene showing them making love was cut out at the last minute of post-production!), eventually goes along with him in a series of brutal killings, including one where they pretend to have car trouble and then shoot a Good Samaritan on the highway, and another where they invade a suburban Chicago home and videotape the murder and rape of an innocent Midwestern-style family. The videotape scene has to be the most appalling of them all, but it does NOT sugarcoat the gory details the way Scream or other glossier “slashers” of recent vintage did.
Director John McNaughton, a former Chicago ad executive who dropped out for a few years to work in a traveling carnival, build sailboats in New Orleans, and then direct music videos during MTV’s heyday (i.e. the era before “reality” shows blossomed), is a master of potent precision and gut-wrenching invulnerability. This film portrays a world in which there’s no romanticized hero to defeat forces deemed to be evil and ultimately disgusting.
Not surprisingly, the filmmaker raised the $125,000 budget for his stunning debut from Waleed Ali, a Chicago home video executive, who wanted a horror film but reportedly was surprised when McNaughton gave him the real thing instead of a cheesy teen film that trivializes death itself. What do you think of when you picture a lorry? Perhaps one of these lorries from popular culture. They might not wear giant sunglasses or have punch-ups with the paparazzi, but that doesn't make these superstars any less well known.
From the Coca Cola Christmas haulage truck from the TV ad to the mysterious characters of the tongue twister 'Red Lorry Yellow Lorry', here is a reminder of some of the most famous trucks, lorries and general haulage vehicles of all time.
1) Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Originally a British tongue twister, you may be interested to know that 'Red Lorry Yellow Lorry' is also a rock band that was formed in Leeds in 1981. Whilst there are no known lorry or lorries attached to the phrase, this is certainly a famous lorry concept which is entrenched in the British psyche. Hitman DVD Review
"Hitman" tells the tale of an assassin who refuses to accept his role as a fall guy in a political conspiracy. Tim Olyphant stars as Agent 47, an elite killer under the employment of a group known only as The Organization. He was hired to assassinate the Russian president, Belicoff. Just like any other jobs, he was perfect and precise, killing his target without flaw. Just another day on the job. But then later on he saw his target make a speech on TV about the "attempted" assassination. Soon after, a string of other hitmen began showing up with him as their target. And Agent 47 is compelled to find the source so that he can finish the job and stop the bounty on his head. "Hitman" takes us in a rather familiar goose chase within urban Eastern Europe as our cold-blooded killer began warming up to his only link to the mysterious president, Belicoff's personal and reluctant sex slave, played by Olga Kurylenko (the next Bond girl).
Now, I say that the goose chase were familiar because we've seen them in prior movies such as Bourne Identity and recent James Bonds. So nothing new here in terms of environment. As far as the acting goes, any sexual tension between Olyphant and Kurylenko peak when they're not speaking and bottom out when they're talking with each other. While I'm not looking for award winning performances, I am looking for something other than just reciting lines.
Dougray Scott, however, plays his role as an Interpol agent convincingly. His character, Mike Whittier, is determined to bring Agent 47 to justice but ran into obstructions setup by Russian FSB police led by Yuri Marklov (Robert Knepper).
"Hitman" did one thing great - shootout actions. If you're a shootout junkie, you should enjoy these scenes because 1) there are plenty and 2) they are bloody. The movie averages one shootout every 15-20 minutes. And they don't disappoint. The one scene at Udre Belicoff's headquarter reminds me of something I see in Hong Kong action movies.
Prior to researching "Hitman" even after watching it, I was not aware that it was based on a video game of the same name from Eidos. Because it was driving me nuts watching a movie about covert assassins who walk around in public uniformly dressed with bald heads and dark fashion suits with a very distinctive tatoo. I'd like to think that such marks would get them caught by any police force worth a salt. But knowing that the characters are based on another media that values looks and persona far more than reasonableness makes a huge difference in my expectation.
All in all, I recommend "Hitman" if you're a fan of action movies. But be sure to check everything else at the door.

American Idol - Will The Show Go On?
American Idol continues to set new records each week with the number of votes garnered from viewers when the time comes to selecting which contestant they liked best and preferred to have them stay in the competition. It is astounding as that interest remains in a talent show that is now into its seventh season, and while television ratings might have dipped slightly this year, it is undeniable that fans still love the show, and would remain devoted as long as there are willing contestants. And the latter numbers in the tens of thousands each year when American Idol auditions are held in the various cities across the United States.
With its seventh season now nearing its climax as one contestant gets eliminated each week until the final two pit their singing talents against each other, there has been a general lack of controversy and scandal this year, unlike that of previous seasons when many American Idol fans tagged onto every news bit that emerged from the show. Even the three judges of Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson got into the act at times which drummed up even more media hype. This season's contestants appear to be genuinely interested in singing and having a chance to establish themselves in the music industry, rather than generating fanfare and interest from other sources.
However, there has also been a noticeable lack of personalities this year. The initial drama generated from the likes of Asia'H Epperson, Kristy Lee Cook and Amy Davis has quickly dissipated as two of them were eliminated early in the competition, while Kristy Lee Cook has been shown to lack any performing abilities and vocal range. The men themselves have looked shy or apprehensive on stage, with the exception of David Cook, whose overbearing confidence can be easily construed as overriding arrogance by many.
Without a doubt, the remaining contestants such as David Cook, David Archuleta, Michael Johns and Brooke White have showcased their vocal talents. But the lack of a performance edge has dulled the show on many occasions. Proponents of the show would applaud this development as they would now be able to concentrate on the genuine singing abilities of the finalists, but this could easily alienate the other fans of American Idol who are genuinely enamored of the star qualities from previous editions such as that of Katherine McPhee's, who is now a regular feature in celebrity gossip columns. Whether this would lead to a stronger show in the long run is anybody's guess, but American Idol is as much about show business as it is about singing, and it remains to be seen if the producers' decision to go mainly for talent this year would be worth the risk.

"My Best Friend's Wedding" And A Bittersweet Run Of The Mill Romance
Everywhere one looks it seems like romantic comedies are springing up all over the place. They are all manufactured much in the same way, and they all seem to be made basically the same. There are a few factors that separate each film such as the actors, locations, and costumes. Even though these statements may be true, audiences still fall in love with these films. Saps, the audience may be, but the fact is that everyone is looking for that perfect love and they can find it in a movie theater. While the film "My Best Friend's Wedding" is much the same as all the others, it holds something far beyond the usual joy and romance, it holds a strange twist on honesty and truth.
In "My Best Friend's Wedding," a food critic by the name of "Jules" (played by Julia Roberts) realizes that she is in love with her best friend of nine years. Luckily he has been in love with her for years. The only problem is that he is going to marry the other girl of his dreams. "Jules'" goal is to get enough confidence within to tell her friend that she is in love with him and stop the wedding in four days. It sounds much the same as any of the other far fetched romances, but what makes this film so special is in the details.
Julia Roberts plays "Jules," the food critic out to win her best friend "Michael's" love and to stop the wedding she knows is coming. In this one Roberts is a very private individual who does not like a lot of attention drawn to her. While her character is tomboyish in nature, she is not ruthless. What we find inside is a very kind and sweet person. Roberts is perfect for this. In her tender moments no one can get upset like Roberts can. She seems to push all the yearning and despair that she has in her bodies up to her eyes. Her vulnerability within her strength fine tunes the character wonderfully.
Cameron Diaz has always done well in the realm of romantic comedies. She can show a bright-eyed innocence that comes off entirely honest and not psychotic (there is a very fine line). In the movie Diaz plays "Kimmie" whose only goals are to make her groom to be "Michael" happy and to become "Jules" new best friend. As chaos ensues Diaz can bring "Kimmie" from exuberant to hurt in point one second flat, and in a way which the audience can't doubt. A scene that should be bookmarked is when she discovers "Jules" kissing "Michael," that look speaks a thousand words.
The locations were very precise and beautiful. The film goes everywhere from a rehearsal dinner at an immense New England Manor to an exciting and vibrant karaoke bar. Every location enriches the scene and provides more dramatic effect. It definitely pays off to book large locations in these movies. Also, who ever decided to put the dancing scene between "Jules" and "Michael" on a ferry ride deserves a bonus.
All the characters fit their costumes extremely well. Costumes are very important in these films because they are a reflection on the how the character feels about themselves, not only that but it gives us something to look at. By putting "Jules" in suits of subdued colors, we know almost immediately that she is more of a masculine figure that does not like to draw attention to her. In contrast we know that "Kimmie" is the feminine bubbly type by all her bright colors and her preppy style. We can tell she is very well to do. A comment has to be made on that lavender dress that "Jules" wears in the ceremony. It was one of the most flattering dresses on Roberts that has ever been seen.
Whether or not someone loves you back is irrelevant in true love. Everything "Jules" does in this movie is strictly for the love of "Michael." In the end it is not about who the person you love is going to choose, but whether or not you can love them enough to help them and support them. "Jules" was willing to and, therefore; we validate that she loves "Michael" immensely.
While others would claim that "My Best Friend's Wedding's" ending had much to be desired, other more open audiences would say that the ending just puts the icing on the cake (icing that is honest and bittersweet of course). What ever one believes in that direction, the audience can all agree that what's relevant are the feelings it gives us. It gives us love, happiness, contentment, and finally understanding. What "My Best Friend's Wedding" offers us that other romantic films don't is superb acting and bittersweet sentimentality.
